I remember my grandfather’s soups and other dishes like it is yesterday. I swear I cant get that taste out of my mouth and it is all good because he was a very good cook. I owe what I know about cooking German food from watching him. It didn’t stop there he put me to work. I didn’t get off easy at all and he was a task master.
I was his caregiver near the end of his life and I had a small baby at that time. She is the very same one that gives me a hard time as of today thanks to my father and that she devil he was with.
Too much pressure was on me because I had no help from anyone from that wicked witch of the west , no wait I take that back because she was a whole lot worse then the fictional character is. My father was not even helping in any situation. My situation became a lot worse I also had my child to take care of too. To make the long story short she is an adult now and just had her second baby by c section. She knows it is not my fault for what had happened and it is between me and her and just leave it at that.
They managed to turn my once sweet baby against me and she has been giving me hell ever since and she has their same toxic mentality and made her the drama queen she really is. The sad thing is motherhood didn’t change her at all one iota of a bit she is very self centered as well as being a damned liar.
I blame my dad for how she turned out.
I altered my grandfather’s original recipe somewhat but it still has the same taste as the original and both versions of veg and non veg options of this same soup. The original recipe had smoked meat of haram sources that will never be used in this soup. That is why I altered it.
This is my version of this soup. Before starting wash and soak 4 handfuls of split green, yellow, or green and yellow split peas mixed for 5 hours to overnight. For the non veg version I used in my pressure cooker 2 tbs of cooking oil, olive or vegetable oil will do just fine. 1 quart or 1 liter of water. For seasoning use 1 bullion, or 3 pinches of vegtea seasoning, or 4 shakes of seasoned salt. Peel , cut and wash 4 carrots. I used the other half of the large onion I used to make my mother’s fish cakes.
Really you are not supposed to store used onions do to the fact they become poisonous when they are left out. Never use old onions. Kindly throw it away. You do not want to make yourself and others sick too, that is why I used the other half of the onion just to get rid of it. Adding 1 shallot is also another option and makes the soup taste yummy too. So above all means add 1 onion or 1 shallot followed by 1 clove of garlic. I added a pinch of black pepper corns to the mortar and pestle and was grinding them. and put it in a small bowl followed by 1 pinch of each in succession of basil, marjoram and thyme.
I fried my onions first until they turned brown added my 3 drops of liquid smoke followed by garlic, the vegtea I added and this is what my taste buds was telling me to add, basil, marjoram, thyme, my coarsely ground black pepper, added carrots, 1 quart or 1 liter of water and gave it a stir.
For the non veg option, add everything above plus adding smoked turkey, or 4 pieces of beef bacon, or 4 pieces of turkey bacon for flavor.
Cover the pressure cooker and cook for 20 minutes. Start counting when the safety valve pops up. When time is up turn off the burner. Let the pressure release fully before you open the pressure cooker.
After the pressure went down then I put it in the pot and cooked some more until the soup had reduced and became a little thicker.
My husband loved this and it is max enjoyment to him. I really feel like a fish out of water by eating something that is non spicy but what the hey this is German food.
