They are called jute leaves in english or jews mallow, In Egypt it is called molokhia and in Nigeria it is call ewedu. This vegetable a cross between spinach and okra. It has the spinach taste along with the slimeyness of okra and it is a draw soup and very delicous. It is served with gbegiri, stew and amala. I did the amala post before this ewdu and it is a yummy and super easy soup. This is how I did it.
I added 1/2 cup of water and 1/4 cup of the meat stock to the pot and added 1 packet of frozen molokhia or ewedu leaves. I did not have to put this in the blender because it is already in tiny pieces. I added 1 bullion cube, 1 wee tiny pinch of baking soda. I do not have edible potash and everyone I have talked to said use baking soda that it works just as well as the potash. It makes a very good draw and I am very impressed. I added either 3 dashes of maggi or knorr aroma, 1 giant pinch of crayfish, 1 pinch of dawadawa powder and 1 pinch of red chili powder.
I stirred and cooked until the the frozen molokhia or ewedu turned in to a soup and I let it boil for 10 minutes on low heat and stirring occationaly. When it is done you can enjoy it with amala.
