My grandfather made the best homemade mashed potatoes. There was so many times that I watched him do it. Of course he put me to work by peeling the potatoes and carrots for a lot of meals he cooked when I was a teenager. I am telling you the old man was a taksmaster.
However I don’t peel the potatoes and quarter them before boiling even though you can do this if you want but the way I do it is boiling them whole with the jackets on them which is a lot healthier and it keeps the vitamins inside of the potatoes.
I boil them in 1 gallon or 4 liters of water until they are soft. Any color potato and type are ok for this dish. Red, russet, Idaho, brown, and Yukon gold can be used. After draining the cooked potatoes, I peel the skin off of them and run a little cold water. the skin comes off of the potatoes very easy this way.
I cut them up in small pieces and add them back to the pot and add 1 pinch of pink salt, 1 small pat of butter and 1/4 cup of milk and mash away with a potato masher. Then I break out the electric mixer and mix it til it is very smooth and silky.
My grandfather used to use an electic mixer while making mashed potatoes. I have seen doony’s blog posts and her instagram posts and I was saying omg I got something to share with her about my grandfather using an electic mixer to make mashed potatoes. I hope she reads this and is giggling about my grandfather using an electic mixer to make mashed potatoes. This lady really loves her gaggets.
I hope everyone likes this recipe. Also you can add roasted garlic with olive oil and parsley or you can add some chives too or just have plain mashed potatoes to go with with your meat and vegetables.
My grandfather used to have mashed potatoes with lots of dishes. He used to make oxtail stew and kidney stew as well as the sugared steak and carrots recipe.
I hope I am not jumping the gun here at this point but this is roughly what I am talking about and I am writing them as seperate recipes so you know what I am talking about.
