I have to admit there is nothing better then an old sloppy joe sandwich. I haven’t had any in ages. Canada has its poutine and here in USA we have our sloppy joes. This yummy thing is so messy even the bread it is on falls apart. It is usually served with a dill pickle and French fries, onion rings, fried mushrooms, onion rings or even a bag of chips. Some people drink some pop or even a milk shake to go along with it.
When we say pop here in USA we usually mean soda, soft drink or cold drink even. Enough of the chatter now it is time to make the actual sloppy joes themselves. Add in to a very hot coldero or cast iron skillet 1/4 cup of grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, canola oil, olive oil, corn oil or peanut oil. Mind you this is on very high heat and let the oil get hot. Chop 1 onion or shallot and add to the oil and let brown. Add 2 cloves of garlic minced and cook them until the rawness goes away.
Add 1 pinch of black peppercorns to mortar and pestle and then add to the pot, add 1 drop hot pepper sauce, 1 pinch each of marjoram, thyme then stir. Add 1 pinch either of pink salt, vegtea seasoning, seasoned salt or 1 bullion cube. Add 1 pinch of either coconut sugar or turbindano sugar, 3 dashes each of worchestershire sauce, maggi or knorr aroma.
Stir and add either 3 dashes of balsamic vinegar, malt vinegar, rasberry vinegar, white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Take 1 lb or 1 kg of turkey, chicken, beef, goat, lamb, veal mince for meat eaters and for vegetarians and vegans it is 1 bag of Morningstar Farm’s veggie crumbles. Stir until mince is fully cooked. Add 1 chopped bell pepper of any color. I am going to relax on this one lol. Usually when you do sloppy joe it is just green bell pepper but the others are just as great and it is rather grand that it is not the same all of the time.
Add 3 tbs if tomato paste, 1/4 cup of water. Reduce heat to low and cook at a simmer for 20 to 25 minutes. Stir in between and the sauce should be very thick. Now you can either add a slice of cheese or not which is depending on your preference and taste. The cheese is merely optional and this on is your choice of which slice of cheese you like.
If using cheese on a hamburger bun or even on a French roll, for hamburger bun you don’t need to break or cut the slice of cheese in half like you do for French roll you can lay it down on the top or the bottom, really it all depends on you. Rosen and Turano are very good and they are halal. After this then scoop out the sloppy joe and put on this bread to make a sandwich.
Enjoy this with your sides and drinks of choice which also includes iced tea. Cheers.
