Oh my God!!!!!!!!!!! This is my very first attempt on making these and they turned out to be the bomb according to Mr. Riaz.
So far this is an easy dish to make and really nothing to it and also something you can eat on a shoestring. Also I am thinking also of friends both irl and in facebook that is from the southern part of USA.
To my friends from Mississippi, Alabamba, North Carolina, Louisiana and Texas: I know when you read this post your mouth is going to water. This is my take on this dish and here it goes.
In my cast iron skillet I heated it up 1/4 cup of corn oil. You can also use canola or peanut oil.
I added 1 pinch of black peppercorns to my mortar and pestle to grind in to a coarse powder and set aside.
I made a batter consisting of 1 handful of nido milk powder, all purpose unbleached flour, all purpose unbleached flour, 1 egg and 3 tbs of water and stirred and made sure it is lump free. I added the contents of my mortar and 1 pinch of seasoned salt. I stirred again and set the batter aside.
I cut 1 green tomato in to thin slices and dipped each slice in to the batter and gently placed it in to the hot oil in batches of 3 or 4 at a time until there is no more tomato slices or batter left.
Line the plate with paper towel and place the finished fried green tomatoes on a plate to absorb the oil from them.
I served them with mustard fried catfish I made last night with a side of grits.
