I know this is everyone’s all time favorite sandwich including mine. My favorite way to eat them since I was a kid is to gently peel away this gooey sandwich and insert a few dill pickle slices inside of it and close it back up again and eat them.
To me this is divine and so delicious. Also adding some grilled onions to this sandwich too is also yummy. Actually my favorite is the dill pickle slices.
This is now to make them: add 2 tbs of either olive oil, corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil or peanut oil in to the skillet. Some even use a butter knife and spread softened butter on slices of bread when they make this sandwich. Instead of oil then I would add 1 pat of butter to the skillet and let it melt. Swish it around to get a nice coating.
Make the cheese sandwich by using 2 slices of bread and 2 slices of cheese. The bread can be whole wheat, rye, or most use white bread like my youngest daughter. It is me that eats the whole grains. Also any type sliced cheese is acceptable. If you have block cheese this is not a problem. Grate it and use this instead of slices if you do not have any.
Gently place this sandwich in the skillet with either the oil or the butter. Let it brown a little bit and turn gently add 1 more pat of butter if using. Let the other side brown a little bit and see if the cheese is melted. When both sides of the sandwich are toasted and the cheese has melted it is ready.
You have your grilled cheese sandwich. Eat it either alone or with soup. Some even call this cheese toast instead of a grilled cheese. I used whole wheat and Swiss cheese for mine.
