Oh my God!!!!!!!! These chili dogs are great because it has been ages since I have had any. A long time ago when I was in high school John Melencamp came out and I was telling Mr. Riaz about it. They told him to use John Cougar which he did for his first song Hurts So Good and he stuck to his guns he hated the stage name they wanted him to use. Kudos to John Melencamp for sticking up to the record company pricks and I do not blame him at all whatsoever. He later released a song of Jack and Diane. In there he mentioned a restraunt called Tasty Freez and chili dogs.
Now it is true there was a Tasty Freez, Dog ‘N’ Suds and Dairy Queen. Two of them went out of buisness ages ago and I remember a Dairy Queen near downtown Park Ridge which is. a suburb of Chicago. This Dairy queen was only open in the summer months. All winter they were closed because there was obviously no buisness. Since we do not go outside for our fast food that again I recreated this at home and I am going to show you how it is done.
First if you care to make this My Famous Homemade Chili which is the link on the left. However I was just a little bit lazy and I ended up cheating a little bit by using 1 can of Chili Man Vegetarian Chili which I open to eat if I really don’t feel like cooking. I did add 1/4 cup of olive oil to the pot but other oils like grapeseed, corn, canola, peanut, almond, coconut, sunflower, safflower, avocado, flaxseed, or even macadamia nut oils can be used as well. Add 1 onion or shallot cut in to half moon slices, 1 green chili and 1 tomato chopped, open the can of this vegetarian chili to the pot only if you are not making my homemade chili mentioned in the link.
The previous paragraph is the lazy way and is done on stovetop only. For the hotdogs I used my instant pot duo crisp for the rest of the steps by adding 1/2 of a gallon which is 2 liters of water to the inner lining of my instant pot and selecting the function of steam on high and place 1 package of zabiha halal hotdogs in there. They can be of beef, chicken or even turkey. Set the time for 10 mintes and select start.
After the homemade chili is made or even if the canned chili is hot then you can turn off the heat and let stand. Now you can remove the hotdogs with a pair of tongs and place them in a bowl and remove the inner lining of the instant pot and empty the water. Place a trivet in to the instant pot and add the disk on top of it and here you will require require 4 long pieces French or Italian which is for sandwiches only. Turano and Gonella sells theese. Make sure they are precut so it is easier for you to toast these up. After they are open add a drizzle of oil inside the bread itself. I used macadamia nut oil here. You can use one type of oil you like and place a slice of cheese inside which you break in half if this is what you like too.
I used Dutch Farm’s American. You pretty much can use any type of cheese you wish including the Mexican crumbling or melting type. Next place this inside the instant pot duo crisp and the like which depends on which model or make of multi functional cooker you you have and select broil at 400F for 5 minutes. After this take and remove with tongs and add the hotdog and chili to the toasted bun either with cheese or without. Also If you wish chop 1 tomato and 1 onion or shallot and add on top of your chili dog. This is totally up to you. Obviously Mr. Riaz caught on quick because he works out of fast food resturant.
With that said I hope you really will enjoy this sandwich. Another way of toasting the bread is on stovetop in a tawa which is a griddle by putting oil on the inside part of the bread and put it oil side down on high heat and flip it over so the other side can become warm as well. Enjoy this with cold beverage of choice.
