Actually I just made this with barley but you can use just any grain as you please including couscous. Grits, oatmeal, malt-o-meal will work great too.
The rest is all entirely up to you. For tougher grains like spelt, wheat, rye, amaranth, millet and steel cut oats it is best you have a larger pot so it doesn’t over boil. It is best to be cooked on low heat too. It is the same ratio as rice 1 cup of grains to 3 cups of water because it expands as it cooks and softens.
Cook for 20 minutes then check the grain and the water levels and repeat for another 20 minutes on regular stovetop.
If in a hurry place in a stovetop pressure cooker on high. This will build up pressure and when the button pops up then lower the heat to medium. Cook for 15 minutes and turn heat off. Let pressure escape. Add 1/2 more of water and repeat for 10 minutes if still a little hard.
Now if you have a multi functional cooker then you can either slow cook on high for 2 hours or pressure cook for same amount of time as stovetop pressure cooker on pressure cooker setting on high.
If you have a slow cooker aka crockpot then follow the same amount of time on high as a multi functional cooker. Obviously multi functional cookers are a lot nicer because you don’t have to worry about turning them off when time is up.
The rest is up to you and you put in there whatever you want and have this for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Just season it however you like either sweet or savory.
The choice is yours. Rice, quinoa, teff, couscous, grits, wheateena, cream of wheat, cream of rice and oatmeal, follow the package directions. However follow this link below for the rice part only. Plain Jasmine Rice Etc.
Whatever I have in mine as I said before is purely optional. I put a chili infused sea salt in mine along with butter powder and powdered cheese from Hooshier Hills Farms. Auguson Farms has it too. You can buy it from either Amazon or Walmart. Also this and herbs, salt and other seasonings of choice can be added and served as a side dish. You can add canned fish in oil too on top of yours. This pot was too much for me to eat so I put 2 cooking spoons full on my plate or bowl and warmed it up in microwave for 130 if cold and leftover.
I make this in advance so I don’t have to cook at last minute before checking my glucose levels. Enjoy.
