I have another meatless item for you and for those that eat a lot of meat that it honestly tastes so good you really do not miss it. It really is very delicious and healthy too.
I took 1 cup of mash ki dal which are tiny white lentils or urad ki dal without its skin. The ones with the skin are black and we are just going to deal with the white today.
I washed them and soaked them for 5 hours and set them aside in a bowl with enough water covering them.
I added 1/4 cup of olive oil and added 1 onion or shallot and browned them. I added to mortar and pestle 1 pinch each of cumin and coriander seeds and ground them then added them to the pot. I added 1 pinch each of turmeric, pink salt or 1 bullion cube and red chili powder.
I added 3 cloves of garlic I smashed with my knife to help peel them easily and added them to mortar and pestle after I got the garlic paper off of them. I added 1 slice of ginger I washed and peeled and ground them then added it to the masala mixture. I stirred and added 1 tomato chopped, 1 green chili sliced and 1 pinch of cilantro.
I added my clean and soaked mash ki dal to the masala mixture, added 3 dashes of maggi or knorr aroma and stirred and added 3 cups of water and turned it down to low and let cook for 30 minutes and kept stirring every 5 minutes to make sure the dal is not burning and to see if there is enough water for cooking. I checked to see if it was finished and it was just a little hard for me when I bit in to it and I added 1 more cup of water with the burner still on low heat and cooked it for another 20 to 30 minutes. I was then done to my satisfaction and I turned the stove off and put the lid back on top of the pot and served it with chapati.
In the summer months I suggest you serve lassi with this dish. Lassi is a yogurt type drink I am going to make some soon and post the recipe.
