Ramadan Mubarak everyone. It is Ramadan again which is my favorite holiday on the whole entire Islamic calendar. What I have to work on and I know is that temper of mine. Ok I know I had come a long way in that department. Enough said because I really want to tell you about this yummy snack item called far far.
What is far far? They are a fun crunchy snack that comes in many shapes and colors. They are perfect for tea time or whenever you want to have even after you break your fast at Iftar time which is in the evening. So yes that we are having breakfast at that time too.
After this we can drink as much water and other drinks and have whatever you want to eat in between this time frame, all the way to Sahur. Sahur time is when you eat your final meal or snack and drink your final glass of water or what have you.
Also the adhan or call for prayer will sound signaling when it is time to break your fast and the time you stop eating and drinking. If the adhan sounds for fajr which is early morning prayer then you are late. This is the time for fasting during Ramadan to start again until magrib time which is the evening prayer.
Ok I am going to answer this before I even get asked this question. If you are sick and taking a bunch of medicine then you are exempt from fasting during Ramadan. If you can cook for poor people this month to give them something to eat.
As for making the far fars, sorry I was just rambling away here. The packages like I said before are in many shapes and colors. I prefer a wok for this and add 1/4 cup of canola or corn oil in there and let the oil get hot.
It should not be to the point where it is smoking then It is too hot and the far far would burn. Making these things are trial and error. Place 1 piece of paper towel in a bowl to absorb excess oil. My method is to test to see if the oil is hot enough it should be at least one minute or two.
You also need a slotted spoon or a skimmer would do nicely. They sell these in Indian and Pakistani grocery stores. They are cheep too and a nice alternative to samsosa and pakora. Drop one at a time and as soon as they expand 3 times their sides and the colors lighten then it is time to asap (as soon as possible) or immediately if not sooner remove them from the hot oil and put in a bowl lined with paper towel to absorb the excess oil.
Repeat until the bowl is completely full. It is worth it and it is not going to burn up and turn brown or black. Also if the oil is too hot on high heat then try lowering it to medium or low heat. It depends on your stove settings too and you do not want the oil to cool though. You have to be extremely fast while making these.
In the future Inshallah I am going to do a live video for my followers in Facebook and Instagram. Even My youngest daughter loves these things and asks me to make them for her. They can also be eaten with chutney of your choice or even hot sauce.
Enjoy and by the way keep your kids away from the stove while you are making these. It is a rule of thumb being safety conscience.
