I have to say I am making up for the times I didn’t post a blog. I am trying to keep to the recipes from my family. I have been doing a lot of blog hopping and going to other sites looking for recipes new ideas and even got to talk with other bloggers on twitter and instagram I have been following but I don’t want to seem like a copy cat. Funny as it seems I have always had adventurous taste buds. I was just born a foodie. This is a simple suji halwa I had learned actually from my husband. Ok I give credit where credit is due. I have actually have taken the art of making Pakistani food and ran away with it. This was our new years halwa we ate. I also make halwa when new babies in my family are born. Now let’s cook.
Ingredients 2 handfuls of suji (farina)
2 green elachi (cardamoms)
1 drop of kerwa essence
1 drop of gulab (rose) essence
10 nuts of choice almond, walnut, peanut, pistachios or char marghz (pumpkin seeds shelled) crushed in mortar and pestle 3 tbs turbidano sugar honey, agave or brown sugar can be used too. 1 handful of dried fruit of choice raisins or dates if using dates take the seeds out and chop them, no worries if using raisins.
1 quart or 1 liter milk
1 pat of butter
1/8th cup of vegetable oil
Method: Use either a skillet or a wok.
I added vegetable oil and a pat of butter. Wait till the butter melts this gives the halwa the flavor. Add suji (farina) toast it lightly til you get an aroma.
I added the turbinano sugar because I stopped white sugar that white sugar is poison. I think I have said it in an earlier blog but really it is no good for anyone.
Add nuts I added almonds and raisins. Hubby didn’t want dates.
Add the sweetener listed here of your choice I used turbindado sugar.
Add the green elachi (cardamom), 1 drop of kewra essence and 1 drop of gulab essence. This is also for taste and aroma. Now add 1 quart or 1 liter of milk and stir. Do not stop stirring at this point because it would burn. Keep stirring until all of the suji (farina) is absorbed by the liquid and looking like a mush and the skillet or wok comes off clean. I hope you really love this recipe a lot it is a special dish in my family even just before eid even. My aim is to try at least to make these sweets without any white sugar I hope you like them.
