Asalamualaykum and Eid Mubarak, Ahtar Mubaraksha, Bayum Mubarek Olsun, Eid Mubarak Hoa, Happy Eid Al Adha. Every year during Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha I write on my Facebook timeline a multi lingual post saying Eid Mubarak. This tasty chutney is mostly for our next recipe coming up and there will be a link posted to come back to this one because it is the topping for that dish. It is also eaten with all types of kababs, samosas, every type of pakoras and most other Indian and Pakistani snacks.
I am writing this post on behalf of someone just like me that cuts white sugar out of their diet because of health issues. Am I a diabetic? No and allhumduallah I am not one but it runs in my family. However diabetics please be aware this contains dates and dates may raise your glucose levels.
Ok in a blender I added 4 giant pinches of dried tamarind that is seedless. If it has seeds soak in hot water for 20 minutes. Boil water in a tea kettle and add it to a bowl while it is steaming hot then add the tamarind. Remove the seeds after it is soft. Let cool and put it in the blender jar or add 4 tbs of tamarind paste. Add 10 dates deseeded. If you have pitted dates be sure to check it over because sometimes one may have a seed in it. This I know from experience and it happened to me during Ramadan.
Also add 2 pinches of dried anar dana ( pomegranate seeds), 1/4 cup of water for ease of processing, 1 small piece of ginger washed and peeled, 1 clove of garlic then blend and add this to a sauce pan. Turn on the heat to low and add to mortar and pestle 1 small broken piece of amchur (dried mango skin), 1 pinch each of cumin seeds, black peppercorns, grind in to a coarse powder and add to the tamarind and date mixture.
Stir and add 1 pinch each of black salt, pink salt, hing, red chili powder and chat masala. Then add 1 tsp of lemon juice and 1/4 of a cup of agave nectar or sugar free syrup.
Stir and cook for another 10 minutes or until the chutney gets slightly thick. The sugar free syrup is Zayad brand and yes it is halal. I make it my business to do my homework so I can stay out of trouble with Allah. It pays to read and be in the know.
A long time ago there were a bunch of books on the subject about what is halal and haram and now days it is all on the internet. Even if you are not Muslim, just google any type of ingredient that you find on the labels of any type of food stuffs, makeup and other personal care. Some of it may gross you out and you would say eew, yuck, gross and that is just plain nasty.
The ingredients I used for making this chutney is zabhiha halal as well as vegan. Also It is just plain yummy. So if you are planning on having people over and plan on making pakoras or samosas, please do not forget to make this chutney. You can even eat it with paratha or puri.
The spices are from any place selling Indian and Pakistani groceries and the Zayed brand sugar free syrup comes from any store selling Middle Eastern groceries. Agave nectar can be found everywhere,
Please enjoy because this is so delicious.
