Khatti Dal (Sour Lentils)

This is another yummy Indian dish that is suitable for vegans. I am now going to show you how to do a 1 pot method for making khatti dal. All I do is I make the seasoning part of the dal first in a pressure cooker and add my dal (lentils) and other masalas (spices) that makes up the rest of this yummy dish. Let’s get started.
I soaked 1 cup of either toor dal, moong ki dal, masoor ki dal or you can mix all 3 of them for 4 hours to overnight after I washed them.
I added to the pressure cooker 1 oz of olive oil and turned it on to high heat. I added 1 pinch each of mustard seeds, hing and cumin seeds, 1 onion or shallot cut in to half moon slices then cooked until it is brown, 1 pinch of pink salt, 1 whole dried round red chili, 3 curry leaves, 3 cloves of garlic chopped, 1 pinch each of turmeric and red chili powder, 1 tomato cooked down til it is mushy, 1 small marble size of tamarind, 1 small piece of ginger peeled, washed and crushed.
I stirred and added the dal (lentils) that I had been soaking to the masala mix with 4 cups of water. I closed the pressure cooker and watched the button pop up and turned the heat down to medium heat for 15 minutes. I turned off the heat when time was up and when the button is lowered then it is time to open the pressure cooker.
I tasted it and the lentils was nice and soft. At this stage you can eat it with chapati or rice.
