Herranka Y Papas (Smoked Dried Herring Fillets With Potatoes)
First I want to say Ramadan Mubarak. Still my heart is very heavy because I miss my dad and what is happening in Palestine under its illegal occupier is really making me deeply upset. I always tell it like it is and I want to draw attention that a blood thirsty tyrant will not call a ceasefire. He is most certainly a war criminal to the highest degree. I am trying to behave myself and it is hard. Shaytan is in prison for a month.
Now this is my original recipe and I have embelished it a lot to really make it stand out and become tasty. Mr, Riaz had a hissing fit that he said he wasn’t going to eat it but he did. I know he would.Above I did a comparison because I just recovered the original picture of this recipe. I made a goof at renaming the picture and it could have been the end of the image, On the left is before some of it was eaten and I am lucky I have some leftover to take a picture so I took that too just in case if that photo was permenantly corrupted.
I had to go and take my blood sugar levels, eat and take my meds. My alarm rings at 6:00am and Mr. Riaz knows I am out here working on my blog. He shuts off the alarm and It was 6:45am just a while ago and I was late for checking my sugar levels, eating and taking my meds. I am livid and put Mr, Riaz again in the dog house.
I used to just make this with boiled herranka and potatoes only. This is done in two separate pots. Herranka is smoked dried herring fillets and lots of Spanish stores have them. They get boiled for 20 minutes with water covering the fish. From here drain and repeat one final time so that it isn’t salty anymore. Take 2 or 3 large potatoes scrubbed and fill the pot with water and let the water levels cover the potatoes and cover and cook them with their jackets on for 30 minutes or until soft.
Make sofrito that is in this recipe here, Halal Pasteles With Arroz Gandoules. The sofrito instructions are there so please do not miss. After you got your sofrito made then you can add 1 tomato chopped. Mash the fish and the potatoes after they are cooked. Add this to the fish and potato mixture along with 1 packet of sazon, 3 dashes of adobo, 1 pinch of oregano, 1 pinch each of cumin seeds and peppercorns to mortar and pestle in to a coarse powder, 1 tsp of capers and a little of its juice, about 10 spanish olives with the pimento inside and a little of its juice too. By giving it a mix in between adding ingredients you are having a very flavorful dish.
These additions are even more fabulous then just boring fish and potatoes and it amps it up on steroids, You eat this just like it is a potato salad but it isn’t at all and you can eat it either hot or cold. Enjoy this with a malt beverage.
